To carry out their works on widening the M4, VGC required confirmation of the depths of the existing structural foundations.
As part of the M4 J3-J12 smart motorway upgrade, VGC were contracted on behalf of the Balfour Beatty and Highways England joint venture to carry out investigative works into the foundations of the Windsor Bridge structure. To further their capability within civils works, VGC required a greater understanding of where the foundations lay and their depths before the widening works could commence.
MGF’s involvement came through a relationship with VGC’s Declan Mcomb (Project Manager) and Mike Condon (Contracts Manager), built through on site demonstrations and classroom presentations. The relationships were developed further through the project with Declan working closely with a MGF Rail Sales Specialist to ensure all delivery times were met with the correct kit.
To coincide with the contractor’s overnight hours, MGF delivered in the evenings and collected in the mornings, providing shoring solutions for both the live Railside foundations, the works at the embankment bases and bridge bases adjacent to the motorway. Supplying KKD sheets, heavy duty walers, hydraulic struts, end protection struts and GRiPSHORE for the eight trial holes to discover the foundations from the 1960s.
Following the discovery of unexpected services and existing sheet piles in the ground, our design required 13 re-revisions of which VGC were complimentary of MGF’s hard work and dedication to the final solution.
