World Quality Day (WQD) is dedicated to raising awareness to the important contributions quality makes towards ensuring business and products success. MGF’s Quality Coordinator, Laura Rigby, excels in delivering her passion and talent for quality, constantly working to overcome and take challenges in her stride.
Laura began working in Quality over 3 years ago after studying Law at Sheffield Hallam University with the aspiration of becoming a solicitor, however after spending time at United Utilities working in the Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) department and a quality management team it allowed her to see the career she felt invested progressing in was quality. Her passion lay with the satisfaction of identifying how companies can operate more efficiently by producing procedures and making processes more effective.
Laura commented: “Quality management is about continual improvement and so am I”.
Due to the nature of MGF’s products, Laura’s job is of high importance: ensuring our products meet the correct standards before they leave MGF depots. We constantly strive and pride ourselves in achieving great customer experiences to the highest standard and best quality of service. Quality is all about ensuring our products, services, systems and processes are effective to ensure we are operating to the best standard and meeting the expectations of our stakeholders.
MGF have supported Laura from the beginning and are proud to witness her achieve Practitioner status of the Chartered Quality Institute (CQI) amongst other qualifications, she would encourage others to take this career path mentioning the CQI approved courses are rewarding.
Laura explained that “no two days are the same in quality, there is a constant variation of tasks and collaboration with different departments working to discover efficient ways for the intended outcome to be achieved”.
There are challenges faced when working in SHEQ departments as some employees don’t always see the benefits of improving something if it works well, Laura’s take on this is “just because something works, doesn’t mean it can’t be better”, she believes many more people would be open to the idea of change if they understood what quality teams were trying to achieve. Working within the construction industry brings its own challenges as there is so much to learn. Laura is constantly taking the opportunity to expand her knowledge, recently working with the welding team to learn the processes so she can continue to support MGF in creating safe working environments for our customers and employees.
World Quality Day is celebrated annually, created by the CQI raising awareness and the importance of the contribution that quality makes to a smooth running product. To Laura quality means helping MGF be the best version of itself, she enjoys ensuring our sustainability and growth by identifying ways to improve.
